Ms. Wentzky’s class learned that owls feed on rodents, birds, and other small animals. Since owls have no teeth, they tear their prey into pieces or swallow them whole. Having no teeth makes it hard for the owl to eat things such as bones, fur and feathers. Hours after eating the bones, fur and feathers of the prey are then regurgitated as a tiny pellet. The boys dissected the owl pellet and examined the contents. Bones, teeth, and fur were found in the pellets. The boys took the contents they found and tried to put the bones make together to form the prey that was eaten by the owl. The boys were able to see part of the owl's food chain. |
